Apocalypses describe, in figurative language, the end of time and the final judgment. The book of Revelation (also known as the Apocalypse) is the best-known example.

The Bible Is One Book

With all these different kinds of literature, written over so many centuries, the Bible is still one book. It tells the history of our salvation, which is certainly the most exciting story ever told.

One way of understanding this "salvation history" is by seeing the story as a series of covenants - sacred bonds between God and humanity. In the Bible, we read how God makes a covenant with Adam; then with Noah and his whole extended family; then with Abraham and his descendants, a whole tribe; then with Moses and the whole nation of Israel; then with David, a king and ruler of many nations; and finally the New Covenant, through Jesus Christ, which embraces all humanity.

Each of these covenants moves a little closer to repairing the damage caused by our sin. Because we, God's creatures, constantly sin and reject God, God can only bring us back to a right relationship with him by slow and painful stages. The whole Bible is really the story of God leading his people back to him.
